Not your grandmother's crochet

My grandmother taught me how to crochet when I was younger along with almost everything else I know. I used to think that it waSkips an "old lady activity" and nobody used or liked anything that was homemade..I was obviously very very wrong..

3 years ago when I was diagnosed with chronic illness, or I guess I should say before I was diagnosed with chronic illness I lost my life as I knew it.. No longer had a job that I worked and studied very very hard for, I no longer had the energy or mental capacity to continue my education since I was enrolled in college. I no longer had hope or desire to do anything . My life truly ended. I was fortunate enough to get out of that depression and that hole I dug myself into and go back to my roots. I started to heal and once I was healing I was able to start a new passion which was sewing and crocheting. I wanted to be more sustainable and once I started practicing and getting the hang of what I was doing I wanted to share that with others.

Now I have nothing but time and this is something that I have grown to love and become good at. I never continued this passion when I was younger because I just thought it was outdated and now that I have this new look on life I understand that homemade products are just as good if not better than store bought. When you shop small you support your neighbors not some rich CEO who care only about the next plane he can buy.

So since nobody's trying to read a book today I wanted to share a few of my favorite and easy to follow patterns That are definitely not in your grandmother's crochet books.

You'll need 6.0 mm crochet hook

I used 2 skeins of I love this cotton yarn but you can use whatever cotton yarn you want.

Ch 23

Row 1 alternate sc (single crochet) and DC (double crochet) you should start with sc and end with DC. I do row 1 in the 3rd loop. 22

Row 2 ch 1 turn sc first DC. Same as row 1 alternate sc and DC. First stitch is a sc last is DC. Repeat row 2 until you have a square about 7in

End on wrong side. For same color border ch 1 3 st in corner and sc 21 stitches along side. 5 sc in corner sc along bottom 5 sc in corner until you get to the first corner add 2 more stitches slip stitch to combine and ch 3.

Next round 3 DC in same space as slip stitch

Skip next 2 sc in next st skip 1 5 DC in next stitch. Skip next 2 sc in next st skip 1 5 DC in next stitch until you reach next corner. DC 5 st in 3rd corner stitch. Skip 2 sc in next stitch Skip 1 5 DC in next. Continue until you reach 1st corner add 2 DC slip stitch to combine and finish off.
